What next? Recyclability and sustainability

Dualit has reduced packaging by over 50% since it started manufacturing Dualit and Nespresso® Compatible* capsules in the UK in 2013. Coffee pods are viewed by some as wasteful, but we want to reassure customers that Dualit NX® capsules are 100% recyclable.

What next? Recyclability and sustainability

Our coffee pod packaging is made up of 4 components:

  • Food-grade polypropylene capsule. This is recyclable anywhere that accepts mixed plastics, like yogurt pots. Don't forget to remove the seal and wash the capsule out!
  • Aluminium lid on the capsule. Check with your local council to see if they collect aluminium or alternatively, visit to find your nearest recycling center.
  • Cardboard box. This is 100% recyclable.
  • Not forgetting the star ingredient - coffee. You can reuse your coffee in the garden in compost, to fertilise or mix it into top soil.

According to the British Plastics Federation (BPF), UK recyclers have stepped up to the challenge and in the last decade there has been increased recycling activity. As stated by the RECOUP Household Survey 2015, an increase of 12.1% of pots, tubs and trays were being recycled. It also records that 75% of UK local authorities collect pots, tubs and trays, so in our opinion you can still have your coffee and recycle it!

How about Compostable Capsules?

Dualit has taken it one step further and launched Compostable Single Origin Coffee Capsules. All you have to do is place the compostable capsules (the pod, lid and protective bag) in authorised collection scheme food waste bins for industrial composting**. The 100% compostable capsules will be broken down in approximately 90 days through the use of natural heat to become compost. Try our single origin blends now.
